What smartphone do you use?

I have an iPhone 4S. I’ve been an iPhone user since the first one came out, but I am, like, old school. My phone is for talking to people and scheduling things. It’s not for lack of trying, though – my husband [has tried to sell me on apps] and said smartphones are wasted on me [laughs].

What apps do you use most often and why?

I use what the phone already came with, but not all of it. I use the weather app, my banking app (Partners Federal Credit Union), my photos and my calendar. I use the Everlight Free reading light app, but it took downloading four or five of them before I found one I liked. I tried Lantern Light and iBooklight, and they were both duds. Honestly, I have found some apps I feel might be useful, but every app I need is already there. There are so many apps out there that I am just not interested in searching for them. I do not have app pride. My friends will show me some app they really like, and I usually say, “Wow, that is a really fun time-waster!” It’s entertaining, or it’s a novelty, but just inside my head is a fun place to be already.

Which apps interest you?

Color-matching apps. For me, as a designer, that is interesting. But I’m not going to spend an hour tracking down this app when my superpower is that I have a great eye already [laughs]. And I do occasionally use the Delta app for flight info.

What’s on your screensaver?

My screensaver is an image from Griffith Park here in Los Angeles, this really vibrant green picture of a rock covered in moss. I hike four to five times a week, and that photo is from a hike I take a lot with my baby – my dog Ollie. That photo is like my Zen moment. I look at my screensaver and it makes me take a deep breath.
